Thoughtful Appliances That Support the Way You Use Your Kitchen

Today, kitchen appliances need to support our fast paced lives without compromising on the quality of cooking. The kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where families gather and talk about their day. Because of this, we always approach appliance selection with intention. Every choice must support flow, storage, and a sense of visual calm.
We begin each project with a simple but essential question: How do you truly use your kitchen? From there, we curate appliances that elevate daily living and allow the design to unfold with clarity and purpose.
Today, I am sharing the appliance features our clients are increasingly prioritizing and why these decisions make a meaningful difference in how a kitchen functions and feels.
1. Seamless Refrigeration That Elevates the Architecture

The modern family wants more refrigerator and freezer space without the bulk of oversized stainless appliances dominating the room. This is where panel-ready column refrigerators shine. At a counter depth of 24 inches, the Sub-Zero Designer Series remains compact and clean, allowing for better circulation throughout the kitchen.
It does not feel chunky or imposing. Instead, it integrates with the design of your home seamlessly. Because it is panel ready, we can craft a custom cabinet panel that blends with the surrounding millwork. This way, your refrigerator becomes part of the architecture rather than an interruption.
2. Refrigerator & Freezer Drawers for Smart Expansion

When you choose a counter-depth refrigerator, you may sacrifice a small amount of cubic footage, but that does not mean you have to sacrifice functionality. Undercounter refrigerator and freezer drawers are one of our favorite additions. They allow you to intentionally expand storage based on your lifestyle. Do you need more space for beverages and milk cartons? Or additional freezer capacity for meats and prepared meals? You have the freedom to choose!
In a recent project, our client selected two refrigerator drawers instead of a refrigerator and freezer combination. We placed them beside the pantry where cereals are stored. This simple decision minimized congestion at the main refrigerator and created an intuitive zone for her children to access breakfast and drinks independently.
This is holistic design in action. We study traffic patterns, storage habits, and family routines before finalizing appliance placement. The result is a kitchen, and home, that feels effortless.
3. A Steam Oven for Elevated Cooking

Whether you cook daily or only on special occasions, a steam oven can transform how you prepare meals and how they taste. It locks in moisture, preserving flavor and texture in a way traditional reheating simply cannot.
Many of our clients share that once they incorporate a steam oven into their kitchen, the microwave is used primarily for warming coffee or making popcorn. Beyond performance, integrating a steam oven into your wall oven stack creates a refined vertical composition and frees the cooktop wall for clean, intentional storage below. It is a subtle yet powerful shift in how your kitchen functions.
4. Ceiling Mounted Hoods for Visual Calm

If you desire a visually open kitchen, especially in a home with lower ceilings, a ceiling-mounted hood is an exquisite solution. Rather than introducing a large statement hood that interrupts sightlines, a recessed ceiling hood maintains openness. It minimizes visual clutter and allows cabinetry, lighting, and architectural details to take center stage. The kitchen feels lighter, more expansive, and intentionally composed.
5. Intentional Cooking Zones with Integrated Storage

Separating the cooktop from the ovens allows for a more intentional layout. When wall ovens are able to be positioned at a comfortable height, you reduce bending and improve accessibility. Below the cooktop, we often design deep drawers for pots and pans, creating immediate and practical storage exactly where it is needed. When performance and storage align, cooking becomes a pleasure rather than a chore.
Quick Takeaways on Designing a High-Functioning Kitchen
Prioritize counter-depth, panel-ready refrigeration to maintain seamless cabinetry and improve kitchen circulation.
Supplement with undercounter refrigerator/freezer drawers to customize storage based on your family’s needs and reduce crowding at the main fridge.
Consider a steam oven for healthier, moisture-rich cooking and reduced reliance on a microwave.
Use a recessed ceiling-mounted hood to minimize visual clutter and keep sightlines open, especially in kitchens with lower ceilings.
Separate cooktops and wall ovens to improve ergonomics and create practical storage drawers below for pots and pans.
Always design around lifestyle first, appliances second. Thoughtful kitchen planning begins with understanding traffic flow, storage habits, and daily routines. Cabinetry should follow that intention.
Designing Your Kitchen Around Life, Not Just Layout
Kitchen design goes beyond cabinetry and appliances. It begins with understanding how you move through the space, what supports you, and where friction exists. We study circulation, storage habits, and daily rhythms before curating appliances and crafting cabinetry that enhance that flow. The result is a kitchen that not only looks beautiful, but genuinely improves how you live each day.
This is the difference between a kitchen that simply looks beautiful and one that genuinely improves your everyday living.
In the coming months, I am excited to share how we incorporated these appliances into a recent remodel featuring Artiqa Cabinetry. You’ll see that the transformation reflects everything we believe at Emora Design Studio: thoughtful design is intentional, globally inspired, and crafted to endure.
If you are considering a kitchen renovation, I would be honored to guide you through a process that feels transparent, refined, and deeply personal. Reach out and start the conversation.
Warmly,
