We often think of design in terms of what we see. The finishes, the furnishings, the final layers that bring a home together. But long before those elements are introduced, the most important decisions are already shaping how your home will live.
Space planning is what allows a home to feel intuitive. It is what makes mornings flow with ease, gatherings feel natural, and everyday routines feel supported. When thoughtfully considered, it becomes the quiet framework that allows your home to truly beat to the rhythm of your life.
Today, I’m sharing how we approach space planning and the key elements we consider to create homes that feel both elevated and deeply livable.
What is Space Planning?
Space planning is the process of shaping how your home functions at its core. It defines how rooms connect, how you move through the space, and how each area supports your daily life. It is not simply about layout, but about creating a sense of flow, clarity, and purpose throughout the home.
When done well, it is something you feel more than you notice. A home feels calm, cohesive, and easy to live in. Each space transitions naturally into the next, and nothing feels forced or unresolved.

What We Consider During the Space Planning Phase
Every home we design begins with a deep understanding of how our clients live. From there, we thoughtfully curate a layout that supports both daily routines and long-term needs.
1. Lifestyle and Daily Rhythm
We always begin by understanding how you move through your day. Where your mornings begin, how your evenings wind down, and how you gather with family or entertain guests. This allows us to design spaces that feel supportive rather than restrictive, ensuring your home works with you and, ultimately, beats to the rhythm of your life.
2. Flow and Connectivity Between Spaces
To make your home feel cohesive, we carefully consider how each room connects to the next and create a natural progression throughout the home. Ceiling and lighting design along with furniture layout plays a key role in this process.
When done well, it allows a room to feel both functional and effortless, supporting how you naturally move and live within your home.
3. Function and Purpose of Every Area
Each space should have a clear intention. Whether it is a personal sanctuary to unwind at the end of the day, a welcoming kitchen designed for gathering and hosting, or a home office that supports focus and productivity, we ensure that every area serves a meaningful role. This clarity reduces clutter, both visually and mentally, and creates a sense of order.
4. Balance Between Openness and Privacy
While open layouts are often desired, true comfort comes from balance. We design homes that allow for connection where it matters, while still preserving spaces for focus, rest, and retreat. This creates a home that feels both expansive and grounded.

A Look Inside Space Planning a Buckhead Home
To illustrate the impact of thoughtful space planning, we often look at homes that feel “almost right” but not quite aligned with how our clients live.
In this Buckhead home, originally built in 1956, previous additions had created a layout that felt fragmented and disconnected. Despite its charm and location, the home lacked a natural flow between rooms, and key functional needs were missing. Our clients considered moving, but ultimately chose to reimagine the home they already loved.

The original layout felt choppy, with limited cohesion between living spaces and no clear alignment with our clients’ daily routines or priorities.

Through intentional space planning, we transformed the home into a cohesive, highly functional environment. We introduced an open-concept living, dining, and kitchen area, integrated every element of the clients’ wish list which includes a pantry, powder room and washer dryer unit on the main floor and created a layout that feels both intuitive and elevated. Thoughtful architectural details, such as concealed doors within custom foyer paneling, allowed us to add function while preserving the home’s classic character.
This is the essence of what we do. We look beyond the limitations of an existing structure to uncover its full potential, curating spaces that not only solve practical challenges but also enhance how our clients live every day.
